| | | ASK THE EXPERT: Look before you hit Print | | Posted Monday, November 27, 2006 1:10:40 PM by Blog57 Team | | QUESTION: When I print off the Web there are words lost at the right-hand margin. This does not happen when I print out e-mail. I have asked family and friends. They tell me the same thing happens to them and they don't know how to correct it. -- Betty Bock ANSWER: Instead of selecting Print, select Print Preview. You'll be able to see whether the page fits. If it does not, you'll see a box that lets you adjust things so it does. The newest version of Internet Explorer adjusts the size of a Web page automatically so it fits. Q: I was notified by my antivirus publisher, without warning, that my subscription had expired. I dug out your article about Grisoft and went there, and there was no free antivirus labeled AVG Free Edition. The same for Spybot. I purchased commercial programs for this, and they were so outdated that I had to spend nearly six hours installing them, then downloading the latest edition on both.... | |

| | | Like its star, Will Ferrell, 'Stranger than Fiction' is odd and eccentric with whole lot of heart | | Posted Monday, November 13, 2006 7:00:21 PM by Blog57 Team | | Rated PG-13 for some disturbing images, sexuality, brief language and nudity; starring Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman; directed by Marc Foster; opening Friday at ShowPlace 8 in Carbondale. "Stranger than Fiction" forms a sort of trilogy with "Adaptation" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," two smart, literate, narratively challenging films written by Charlie Kaufman.Only it's better than either of those movies. Scripted by first-timer Zach Helm and directed by Marc Forster ("Monster's Ball," "Finding Neverland"), ""Stranger than Fiction" is less infatuated with its own clever complexity than with the struggles of a human heart. This is typical of Forster, a director far more interested in plumbing a story's emotional currents than in showing what he can do with a camera. In what is essentially a straight role, Will Ferrell plays Harold Crick, a Chicago-based IRS auditor whose world has been largely reduced to mathematical certainties and probabilities.... | |

"We only moved five miles away, but this has a whole different feel out here. We're still so close to everything, but coming down that road, it's just a peaceful feeling. | | | Beware of kitchen redo deals too good to be true | | Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 3:11:29 AM by Blog57 Team | | We recently came across a newspaper advertisement inviting readers to take advantage of an "unbelievable" kitchen remodeling "package" for just under $10,000! The display showed a photo of a lovely kitchen, and even offered to throw in a free sink with presentation of the ad. Upon closer examination, we noticed a small asterisk next to the price that referenced some very fine print at the bottom of the ad. It said the special "base package" included: removal and disposal of existing cabinets and countertops; installation of up to 12 cabinets; two 8-foot slab granite countertops with a bullnose edge and 4-inch backsplash ; cutouts in the slab for a sink and faucet; and installation of a sink and faucet. Sounds pretty good, right? Wrong! What stood out to us as veteran remodelers and consumer advocates were all the missing details.... | |

| | | Going Green With Bamboo | | Posted Saturday, November 04, 2006 11:02:58 PM by Blog57 Team | | Tom and Joanne Sullivan's kitchen has bamboo countertops, something the Sherman Oaks, Calif., couple hope will someday become a staple in "green" households across the United States. As a rapidly renewable resource, bamboo - which is actually a woody-stemmed perennial grass that can grow to heights of 30 feet - long has been used by builders of environmentally sensitive kitchens for everything from flooring and cabinets to cutting boards and window treatments. Only recently, however, have manufacturers like Sullivan come up with a way to make the hardwood usable for countertops. .... | |
