Only after burning out two or three blenders do people discover they want to pay that much for a good blender, she said. ....

NORWALK, Ohio (AP) -- Jury selection began Tuesday in the trial of a couple accused of making some of their 11 adopted special needs children sleep in cages. Michael and Sharen Gravelle are charged with 16 counts of felony child endangering and if convicted could face one to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000 for each count. The process of seating a jury in Huron County Common Pleas Court could take days, with 100 people yet to be questioned. Earlier, about 350 potential jurors were sent questionnaires, and 250 were weeded out because of bias or other issues, said Ken Myers, who represents Sharen Gravelle. "There is no case. We're going to win this thing," said attorney Richard Drucker, who represents Michael Gravelle. The youngsters were placed in foster care last fall after a county social worker likened the wood and chicken-wire enclosures to cages or kennels....

LONDON - The hills are alive with the sound of walk-outs as British composer Andrew Lloyd Webbers production of The Sound Of Music opens in Londons West End theatre district this week. Two of its leading actors have quit in the run-up to the four-million-pound (six-million-euro, 7.6-million-dollar) extravaganzas premiere on Wednesday, attracting a blaze of publicity. But it seems unlikely that the pairs decision to bid the musical so long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good night, to quote one of its songs, will harm its chances of box office success. Millions have been following the shows progress since Lloyd Webber said he would award the female lead, famously played by Julie Andrews in the 1965 film, to the winner of BBC reality television show How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? Connie Fisher, a 23-year-old call centre worker, was plucked from obscurity to take on the role following a vote by viewers....

Kuala Belait - The government, getting tough on cleanliness to the extent of amending laws on Minor Offences Act to deter littering and indiscriminate dumping, has shut down a restaurant in Belait town for a lengthy period of three months for poor hygiene. The Enforcement Unit of KB Municipal Department issued a closure notice for three months instead of the normal two weeks, as this is the restaurant's second offence for unsatisfactory cleanliness. The shutdown was made due to a recent inspection by the Enforcement Unit and Belait Health Department. Under Municipal rules, any business premise found to have committed a second offence faces a three-month closure which will automatically be issued. In the inspection, officials discovered inappropriate and untidy food and utensils, preparation place, poorly maintained grease trap and faulty equipment such as freezers and iefigerators at the business premises, which is in breach of the conditions of the municipal licence....

EASTON | A former Northampton County Prison guard filed a lawsuit Thursday claiming he was wrongfully fired following a fight with an inmate. Steven Romig, 44, of Bethlehem is seeking in excess of $2 million against six defendants, including the department of corrections, the prison and Northampton County. County Executive John Stoffa declined comment on the lawsuit saying it was both a personnel issue and pending litigation. Director of Corrections Todd Buskirk said he has yet to see the lawsuit. "I have not yet seen it. It would be inappropriate for me to comment at this time," he said. The lawsuit stems from a July 15, 2003, incident involving Romig -- a 15-year prison guard at the time -- and inmate Donald Dilliard....

Some people go back to school to study the great books. Others would rather learn how to throw a 14-inch knife, or hammer yellow-hot steel into semi-useful shapes or whip up a chocolate ganache that would make Julia Child sigh. There are hundreds of unusual schools in the U.S., teaching subjects increasingly diverse. Most are run by entrepreneurs trying to turn their knowledge and love of an obscure field into a business. Best of all, they don't require homework. Here, FSB enrolls in a few fall offerings around the country. ....

Dear Friends: Food safety is very important, because perishable food that goes bad can cause food poisoning. Here are some important hints to keep your kitchen safe: Meat and poultry should be placed in the refrigerator or freezer as soon as possible. After grocery shopping, put perishables away first. Don't thaw food on the counter or in the sink for more than two hours. When the temperature is high (85 degrees or above), don't leave food out for more than one hour. Meat and poultry must be cooked thoroughly to kill bacteria. Meat should be cooked to 160 degrees, poultry to 170-180 degrees, and fish to 145 degrees. Although meat might look done, it should always be checked with a meat thermometer. Store leftovers in small, shallow containers and place in the refrigerator immediately, so they cool quickly....
