Cayman Islands Jazzfest

Boney James, one of the International performers, demonstrates his genius with a saxaphone on the Friday night at the Cayman Islands third annual Jazz Festival. Photo by Wendy Ledger This year the third annual Jazzfest, organized by the Department of Tourism, began on Thursday 30 November at the Westin Casuarina Resort. The festival drew larger crowds than ever, and appears to have already established itself as a significant event for jazz fans. International artists included Natalie Cole, Kem, Jeffrey Osborne, Arturo Tappin, Boney James and Mike Phillips. The 2006 lineup also featured local bands Velvet Touch, Mainstream, Hi-Tide and Swanky. Intransit, Caymans own jazz-funk band kicked the event off. It was a good choice, as their seamless fusion of Caribbean sounds with their own Jazz roots made their music the ideal overture for the whole of the rest of the event....

The latino legacy

Matt Preston looks at the cuisines underpinning this culinary revolution. FORGET France, North Africa or South-East Asia: nothing is hipper in food and drink right now than the flavours of the Iberian Peninsula and its former colonies. We've come a long way since Spanish food was stodgy paella served with chips and a soundtrack of Una Paloma Blanca, and dining Latin America-style meant frozen margaritas at Taco Bill's. Victoria boasts an ever-increasing array of Spanish and Latin American restaurants presenting the "real food" of their region, and buying once hard-to-find ingredients has become as easy as a trip to Fitzroy, Tullamarine or Springvale. Leonardo Cuce opened Carlton's Inkari restaurant a couple of years ago to showcase the food of Latin America....

Decorated sailor gets his medals replaced

When it comes to talking about honors and medals Harold Brewster is a man of few words. The anecdotes turn to his family, his friends. He says very little about his own. On Thursday, he couldn't hide his tears when friends and staff at the Mae Volen Senior Center presented him with an American flag cake and war medals, restored after being stolen a decade ago while he moved to Florida from New York. ....

Woodworking shop at Luke relaxing place

The whine of the band saw and the patter of falling wood chips create sweet music in the Wood Skills Shop operated by the 56th Services Squadron at Luke Air Force Base. The wood shop is one of the quality-of-life "people programs" that make life a bit more inviting at the base, said James Nowicki, 45, a retired Air Force master sergeant who has served for about 2 1/2 years as the wood crafter for the shop. Woodworking, Nowicki said, gives those who do it a great deal of satisfaction. ....

Food writer finds fodder in Maine

STONINGTON - The food writer Molly O'Neill was tugging meat out of a lobster claw the other night in the kitchen of the Community of Christ Church. Dick Bridges, a lobster fisherman from nearby Sunset, was standing next to her explaining his recipe for lobster chowder. Water, potatoes, onions, salt, pepper, basil and steamed lobster sauteed in butter. Plus two sticks of butter per four or five lobsters. Ah, but fried lobster tail, a preparation in which the tail is removed from a lobster, shelled and fried in butter, is superior, Bridges said. A less well-known and rarely practiced method, the quick frying preserves flavor better than steaming or boiling. "It doesn't get any better than that," he said. O'Neill asked Bridges what he remembered about lobster from his childhood years....

FMHS senior in his element outdoors

HOMEWORK By ERIK LINCOLN The Daily Sentinel The temperature was in the mid-40s. The day began even colder — and with snow — but the skies over the Colorado National Monument were a clear blue with a few strings of clouds. Fruita Monument High School senior Michael Walsh nonchalantly walked down the Devils Kitchen trail as one of his sandal-clad feet nearly stepped on a cactus. Walsh was in his element. "To live, for me, is best done out here, out in the wild where I enjoy myself the most, and I can come home feeling good every day," Walsh said. There’s a passage in Albert Camus’ "The Stranger," where the main character, Meursault, is at an Algerian beach with a love interest. Meursault describes the "delicate froth" sea foam made when it was cast into the air and fell onto his face....
