Bloomberg Opens Warming Centers Around NYC
Posted Wednesday, February 07, 2007 3:01:02 PM by Blog57 Team
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced that due to the extended extreme temperatures and the number of homes that have been without heat, the City has opened nine temporary warming centers in partnership with the American Red Cross. These centers, nearly twice as many as were opened during previous cold emergencies, are located in areas of the City from which the highest concentrations of 311 calls for lack of heat have come in recent days. Simultaneously, the City’s Department of Homeless Services has doubled its homeless outreach and temporarily suspended certain shelter intake procedures to let homeless individuals access any available shelter as quickly as possible regardless of whether a particular shelter’s services match that client’s needs. VINELAND -- Carolyn Lanzi of West Oxford Street scrubs her bathroom more than most people, but the rust-colored stains on her toilet bowl and the brown streaks on her shower curtain liners persist. For years, the Lanzi household has changed showerheads, replaced spigots and rewashed clothing. ....

Fixtures range widely in price, features

In his 25 years as plumbing inspector for Medfield, John Rose has examined a lot of faucets and showerheads. And as manager of construction administration at R.W. Sullivan Engineering in Boston, Rose picks plumbing fixtures for homeowners and hospitals, among other clients. His top tip for finding the best faucets and showerheads? "Take advantage of plumbing and fixture supply showrooms," Rose says, "versus the large chains like Home Depot and Lowe's." Showrooms like Ferguson J.D. Daddario in Newton, says Rose, "generally carry a larger selection of models than chains," and "the staff takes the time to explain the differences among models." Such help can make all the difference when prices for faucets and showerheads range from $45 to more than $6,000, and features can differ widely....

A nation obsessed with cleanliness Germ phobia a symptom of social disconnectedness, experts say

Now an inescapable part of daily life, antibacterial and sterilizing products have become big business in Japan. This would now seem to be a nation of obsessive cleaners, even if some people may not be as hygienic as they think. How did Japan come to be so obsessed with cleanliness? The two-member cleaning crew entered the guest room at the Imperial Hotel in Hibiya, Tokyo, shortly after the guest had checked out. By the time they had made the bed, checked the fixtures and cleaned every last part of the room, more than 30 minutes had gone by. Even then, however, they were not done. Officially, cleaning is not complete until an "inspector" checks the room, looking to see if the crew have left a single drop of water in the bathroom, a hair on the floor, or finger marks on the windows....

At her own company, she masterminded the designing, building and financing of out-of-this-world museum exhibits, including one featuring an animated squid robot with 18-foot tentacles. As president and CEO of the St. Louis Science Center, he was one of her clients. Stacy and Doug King married six years ago. For most of those years, she commuted between the couple's swank loft in downtown St. Louis and the home they built in San Antonio, Texas, where her younger daughter was completing high school. Both Stacy, a native Texan "in my late 40s," and Doug, a Californian who's "in my late 50s," have two children from previous marriages. Their offspring's need for bedrooms when they visit prompted the couple's move two years ago to a sprawling, 50-year-old Ladue home that just happens to nestle in its own mini-forest....

Guelph, ON (PRWEB) November 9, 2006 -- Industry estimates indicate that vessel sinks now account for close to 20% of all bathroom sink sales. This bathroom design trend arrived nearly 10 years ago but has really picked up momentum, partially due to home owners looking for fresh decorating ideas but can also be contributed to the falling cost of these luxurious fixtures. BathroomVesselSinks.com is an online distributor who has taken advantage of this trend and has just completed updating their product line with over 30 new sink models and 27 new vessel sink faucets. ....

Inventions for the home... and happy place

One of my favourite movies is Home of Our Own, which is set in the 1960s and tells the story of a single mother and her batch of kids building a house together. One of the best scenes is when everyone is standing around the new indoor toilet, watching as it flushes for the very first time. No more trips to the outhouse. Clapping hands and then a scramble ensue as the successful first flush sends the family tripping over each other to use the toilet first. That sort of sets the scene for one of the highlights of our lives when Pete was home for seven days earlier this month and the Mickey Mouse plumbing of the old farmhouse received its last rites. Not only did Mr....

EGYPT LAKE - Mildred Miranda begins her day waking up at a friend's home. She then takes her middle grandchild, Robert Rodriguez, 6, to Twin Lakes Elementary School. For the next six hours, Miranda will hang around anywhere she and her youngest grandchild, Luis Rodriguez, 2, can relax out of the sun, usually in a restaurant or laundry facility. By afternoon, she picks up Robert at school. The three of them, along with Miranda's oldest grandchild, Demarie, 16, take whatever shelter they can from the weather until nightfall, when they return to the home of another friend for a night's sleep. It's been that way for more than a week, since she was evicted from her home at San Marin Apartments, 3501 W. Waters Ave. The reason given is nonpayment of rent, but Miranda said it's really because she complained to Hillsborough County code enforcement about the condition of her apartment....

Say you're a budget-conscious homeowner who's entering this, the nesting season, with, oh, $3,000 in savings to invest in your space. Where do you put it to get the most bang for the bucks? The roof? New carpeting? Window treatments? Spending your hard-earned money on all of those things can make a big impact and would represent a good investment, but some local designers have some other clever ideas to make that $3,000 get impressive results. Maria Wrona, designer and owner of Home to Order in Kingston, said $3,000 will make the most impact in the kitchen. As the one room where everyone gathers, and often the spot to entertain guests, a dollar in the kitchen can go a long way, she said. The simplest upgrade is to focus on appliances, Wrona said....
