| BRIGHT IDEAS | | Posted Monday, January 29, 2007 3:03:19 PM by Blog57 Team | | Inexpensive kitchen updates can make a huge difference in the look of your home. Here are a few to consider. To open up a small kitchen, remove upper cabinet doors. Paint the inside of the cabinets a bright color and keep everything organized. Paint an appliance to dramatically update it. Be sure to use a paint made specifically for appliances, because others wont adhere correctly. Remove a few backsplash tiles with a grout remover and chisel, then replace them with decorative tiles that fit your kitchens theme. If youre renting and cant paint your walls, use fabric instead. Stretch it over canvases and mount them on the wall. Or attach fabric directly to the wall so its easy to take down and wont cause damage. Change a seat cover, whether with upholstery or a padded cushion. It is an easy and inexpensive way to make an old kitchen chair look new.... | |

| | | Updating a '50s kitchen for a family | | Posted Sunday, January 21, 2007 1:04:35 PM by Blog57 Team | | Kim and Peter live in a ranch-style house with their two daughters, Sarah and Christie. From the outside, their home looks like the others in the neighborhood, but inside they had a kitschy kitchen that hadn't seen a renovation since the 1950s. The room was so authentic it had actually been used in several TV commercials.Despite the family's love of retro, their cramped old kitchen was just not cutting it any longer and they desperately needed an efficient space. They not only wanted a kitchen in which to cook for family and friends, they needed a proper, commercial space in which to test recipes for their gourmet specialty foods business. The kitchen was short on functionality and space. And, since it contained an eat-in area, only half of the room was useable as prep space. So, the first thing I did was to rip out the eating area and knock down the wall between the kitchen and the adjoining dining room.... | |

| | | Kitchen cabinets, conference tables not furniture: SC | | Posted Thursday, November 23, 2006 1:00:37 PM by Blog57 Team | | New Delhi, Nov 08: Fixtures such as kitchen cabinets, storage units, large reception or conference tables need not be classified as 'furniture' for the purpose of levying excise duty, feels the Supreme Court. While hearing an appeal filed before it, the court opined that it has to be determined whether or not the articles fit the definition of furniture. Referring to various dictionaries for deciding the meaning of the word furniture, the court concluded that those articles which are "movable" can be equated with it for considering duty. Accepting that items such as storage cabinets, kitchen counters, large reception/conference tables were "fixtures" and not "furnitures", a Bench comprising Justice Ashok Bhan and Justice Markandey Katju said: "Ordinarily, furniture is not something immovable or something which is fixed in a position which can be removed only by Cannibalising".... | |

| | | building for life | | Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 11:18:28 AM by Blog57 Team | | Jennifer and Eric Engstrom just wanted to replace their refrigerator. Their old one was freezing the eggs and melting the ice cream. They considered enlarging the cabinets to accommodate a new one but eventually decided against it. Instead, the Engstroms ended up with a certified "green" kitchen. The Shoreview couple became part of a growing trend toward more sustainable and environmentally responsible living spaces. They had already incorporated "green" aspects into their lifestyle ? they recycle, compost and belong to a community farm ? so this was a way to express values important to them. "I see what it takes to get our resources," says Jennifer Engstrom, a geologist. "Once we get them, we have to take care of them." People define "green" differently, but those in the know describe it as a holistic view of home remodeling and building.... | |

| | | Soup kitchen's cabinets emptying | | Posted Monday, November 06, 2006 11:15:25 PM by Blog57 Team | | In a season of plenty, the cupboards at Our Daily Bread are going bare. And if they aren't filled soon, Mary DeLazzer, kitchen director, said the soup kitchen at 1426 14th Street W. is "dangerously close to a shutdown." In her 19 years with Our Daily Bread, DeLazzer said she has never been so short of food or the lines outside the door so long. Standing the doorway of her pantry, DeLazzer pointed to the partially filled shelves. "What you see here will be gone in two or three days," DeLazzer said. Just a few blocks away, Major Jack Repass at the Salvation Army faces the bare shelves For the past two years, a donor gave the local Salvation Army 40,000 pounds of nonperishable food for the shelter's kitchens.... | |

The decision was made by KCD President, Damion Rutherford, on Tuesday. "These recent changes affect the information we give to our customers. It's just not as accurate as it once was, and we have to do something about that", Rutherford said. Rutherford also added that "...the e-Books will still contain great information for our customers. The useful tools to help through the remodeling process, tips on hiring a contractor, and local company reviews will still be there. The biggest change will be in the how, what, and why of our remodeling recommendations. This is the information that was affected by market changes.... | |

| | | How to make a small kitchen big enough for two cooks | | Posted Saturday, November 04, 2006 7:20:45 PM by Blog57 Team | | Q My partner and I have a tiny kitchen, but we both like to cook -- and be in the kitchen at the same time. Any suggestions that would make our kitchen work better without completely tearing down and starting over? A Maximizing space in a cramped kitchen is always a challenge. Here are some quick tips by Certified Kitchen Designer Patsy Zakian-Greenough and me to help make your kitchen work for you: 1. Avoid shopping at ``big box'' discount stores. Unless you have a huge pantry, storage in the garage and a second refrigerator in the garage or laundry room, don't crowd your kitchen with bulk items. Europeans shop twice a week and sometimes daily -- adapt to their style of shopping. 2. Donate items in your kitchen cabinets that you don't use anymore to a charity or thrift store.... | |

| | | Highs and lows of kitchen cabinets | | Posted Thursday, November 02, 2006 7:01:14 PM by Blog57 Team | | Q . What's the difference between stock, semicustom and custom cabinets? A . Stock cabinets are the most basic, no-frills type of cabinets. Home centers and suppliers usually keep these on hand, so they're usually available for immediate delivery -- with no need for special ordering. They are the least expensive option, but you will usually be limited on choices in terms of color, finish and door-styles. Semi-custom cabinets add more detail and options such as crown molding, molding on the bottom edges, side panels and glass doors. More choices in styles, color and finish are available, but semicustom are more costly than stock. You may have to have your dealer order these from the manufacturer. With custom cabinets, the sky's the limit. In this category, practically anything you can dream up you can have built.... | |
